How do I get the perfect lighting for the event?
I’m shooting models in a vintage nightclub setting as part of a charity calender soon and I need to know what I need to get the perfect shot.
As it will be set in a nightclub there will be UV lights, spot lights etc… that I don’t exactly want in every photo. I have an off camera flash (430EX ii canon speedlite) and a stand and brolly as well as a tripod and a 50mm 1.4 lens. What else will I need to get the perfect lighting? The theme will be vintage marilyn monroe etc…
Where do I position the strobists etc…
If you want the ambient light (ie spots, UV) in the photo, shoot below your max sync speed (how much below depends on how bright the ambient is). If you want to kill the ambient (flash lit only) shoot at or near your max sync speed (usually around 1/200).
You have a one light set-up at present – you may find you need a reflector to fill in the shadow side if its a little dark & to even up the lighting ratio a bit. You probably want the light at a 45 deg angle to the subject & the reflector opposite side for fill. A brolly will give you nice soft light & it will bounce light around a fair bit too.
Take some test shots beforehand to check exposure – I assume you are shooting manual flash not TTL. Are you using radio triggers or a Canon ST-E2 transmitter? The ST-E2 will allow TTL (I think, not a Canon shooter), if you’re using triggers, it’ll be manual output.
Don’t forget aperture controls the flash exposure, shutter speed controls the amount of ambient. The closer the light source, the softer the light.
